12 June 2012 CONNEMARA Tuesday

In the freezing summer weather we set off for Connemara in the car/bus, with Dal and I in the prized back seats.
Our quest to find Connemara himself was fulfilled...

Nice one!

There was another monument erected behind him with the inscription "in 1997 nothing much happened here", only the Irish....

On to grander views we went, reaching the great heights of Sky Road in Clifden, with Glenabbey Castle captivating our imagination before the sweeping views of the ocean took our breath away....seriously! The wind was howling up on the hill, buffeting us left, right and centre.

Down through the undulating valleys on the, by now familiar, narrow country lanes, the hills dotted with killer sheep - true story - we didn't stop to investigate though, just going by what the tourist books say.

Lunch was at one of the fishing villages that give the coastal folk their unique well-weathered ruddy complexion. Cleggon was the little harbour town, offering it's fresh produce straight from the sea so of course, we all had fish!
Our leisurely ramble home went winding past many a pasture and cottage until we came upon the magnificent sight of Kylemore Abbey with it's long history of various owners.  Starting out as a gift, it is currently owned by Benedictine Nuns.
